Gutter Installation Under Drip Edge

If there s a drip edge installed where the fascia meets your shingles and the gutter is hung below the drip edge get some roll flashing and tuck it up under the drip edge and over the top of the gutter.

It is put under the shingles of an attic to flow water directly into the gutter. The best practice is to always install the drip edge so that it is inside the gutter. Use tin snips to cut the gutter apron flashing roll in two 3 in. So the rainwater flows into the gutter and out of it through downspouts attached along the wall and away from the house.

Home centers sell rolls of 6 in. Secure the drip edge with roofing cement. The gutter is installed right under the drip edge which is tilted purposely. The whole purpose is to direct the water into the gutters.

Make sure the outer edge extends over the gutter. It should never be installed outside the gutter i e against the fascia board. The drip edge not only safeguards you from potential damages but it also preserves the appearance of your roof. Slip the wide flat flange of the material all the way under the first course of roof shingles as illustrated.

How to install a drip edge. For proper water drainage the drip edge on the rakes should always overlap the drip edge on the eaves. While on the other hand a drip edge is installed to the trim and usually hangs directly behind the back of the gutter. If your gutter has been previously installed rather than taking it down and redoing it you can easily place a small strip of metal flashing under the drip edge and over the back of the gutter as shown by the illustration at the bottom of this page so the water will shed into the gutter.
